Pisa and surroundings

Pisa is a town full of art, home of one of the oldest and most prestigious university and several research centres, with one of the newest and most specialized hospital in Italy. It is also a perfect starting point for natural and cultural journeys around Tuscany. The world famous artistic towns of Lucca, Firenze and Siena, the charming medieval centres of Certaldo, S. Gimignano and Volterra, the beaches and the amusements of Versilia, the peace of the hills and small villages around Pisa and of the mountains in the Apennines between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. These places can be easily reached in daily tours.

June is the month of festivity for Pisa, with several cultural events and shows, it culminates with the famous Luminaria di San Ranieri (Patron of Pisa), on the night of the 16th, with the unique beauty of the river promenades, the Lungarni, lightened up with the natural light of hundreds of candles. Every 4 years Pisa hosts, on the Arno River, the “Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare” between Pisa, Genova, Amalfi and Venezia, a boat race recalling the battles between the 4 main marine city-states of Italy in the Middle Ages.
